Get ready for some sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll! I read this book while on vacation for spring break, sitting on a beach, enjoying the ocean breeze (and a margarita, or two). But I would have enjoyed it just the same had I been stranded at the airport with a 3-hour delay (also part of the trip). This book is unique in a few ways. Firstly, it is written in an interview style, jumping from character to character in a conversational manner. Secondly, it comes across as a documentary film in a written format, like a Rockumentary on the page. The book follows two rock acts, solo artist Daisy Jones and the band The Six as they begin their careers, join forces, and ultimately hit megastardom. We see it all- the tour bus to the arena shows. We watch the band members battle drug addiction, relationship problems, clashing egos, and artistic differences. Despite the tension and turmoil we still feel invested in this juggernaut of a band and gladly go along for the fated ride. My favorite part of the book came in the middle when the two main characters, Daisy and Billy were writing songs for their debut album. The two have an undeniable connection, which both helps and hinders their success. Although the book seems to be loosely based on the band Fleetwood Mac, the characters are unique in their own right. This book was like an extended “Behind the Music” that I didn’t want to end.
