Friends are always asking about anti-aging skincare products and what to use, and often they really don’t want to add too much to their routines. I can’t remember where I first heard about the ABCs of skincare, but nonetheless, I always refer to it when friends inquire. The “ABC” approach to skincare is a straightforward daily routine supported by dermatologists. It centers on three main ingredients: Vitamins A, B, and C. This method helps protect, repair, and refresh your skin without needing a complicated 10-step process. Obviously, everyone needs to use a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF, but these are the essentials for treating all skin types and keeping them healthy. Read more below about each ingredient, plus my recommendations and the products I use too.
(A) Vitamin A (Retinoids): Apply at night to boost cell turnover and support collagen production. It is considered the best option for reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. This ingredient is also the trickiest to recommend because it comes in various strengths and levels of efficacy, as well as prescription vs. over-the-counter options. Do not jump right into using Retinoids without talking to a dermatologist or at least reading up on them (start with this article). Try any of these brand options: Paula’s Choice, SkinMedica, or Shani Darden. I use this one by Alloy.
(B) Vitamin B (Niacinamide): Helps balance your skin barrier, reduce redness, and keep your skin hydrated. It also calms irritation and is a great choice for sensitive or dry skin. Try any of these brand options: Medicube, Paula’s Choice, or Sunday Riley. I use this one by Cosrx.
(C) Vitamin C: Use in the morning to brighten your skin, fade dark spots, and protect against UV rays and environmental stress. Try any of these brand options: Skinceuticals, Ursa Major, Maelove. I use this one by Timeless.
Morning: Wash your face, apply Vitamin C serum, Vitamin B serum (Niacinamide), and finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
Night: Wash your face, use a Vitamin B serum to calm your skin, then apply a Retinol or Vitamin A product. Finish with a moisturizer.
