The other day I was watching The Today Show and they had a segment on about the resurgence of the handwritten note. It began showing children making greeting cards to send to isolated seniors during their self-quarantine. The kids were encouraged to send words of inspiration to those in nursing homes who rely on family and friend visitors to feel connected to the outside world. It got me thinking about how much impact the written word has today. With all that is going on in our world, it seems fitting to look back to a time when written letters were necessary (and appreciated). Recently, while doing some Corona-cleaning, I found a bunch of letters written to me by my best friend while in college. Back in 1990 there were no cell phones, text or even email. We wrote letters to each other about our roommates, keg parties and our burgeoning social lives. My fond memories of these letters, paired with my love for personalized stationery first prompted this post (I started it months ago, and it lingered in my “draft” file). Lately, however, I feel like it is time to break out my old post and dust it off, adding a new spin: let’s get writing again. I do love a Zoom conference and FaceTime with my sister, but a nice letter in the mail might mean more now than ever. Have anything that you wish you said to someone in your life? It may be easier to break your silence with a sentimental note. Whether you want to take the time and order personalized stationery, or head to Etsy to find funky, original notecards, just do it! Surprise a friend with a sweet note, inspire a young relative with a letter of encouragement, or just jot a quick message to your high school bestie. We won’t be visiting each other any time soon so let’s get to writing!
