I know these remaining days of summer are for soaking up what is left of the warm weather outside, but sometimes I need a quiet hour on the couch to lose myself in a good TV show. Here is a list of recently binged shows & movies that are worth a watch. (I like to crank up the AC and snuggle in a fluffy throw.)
Anatomy of a Scandal (Netflix): With Sienna Miller and Michelle Dockery (from Downton Abbey), this bedroom meets the courtroom drama thriller is worth the binge. “James and Sophie Whitehouse live in a blissful, rarified world. A Minister in Parliament with a loving family at home–James’ trajectory appears without limits. Until a scandalous secret suddenly comes to light. Barrister Kate Woodcroft has her own trajectory, and her prosecution threatens to tear into Westminster, the Whitehouse marriage, and her own personal esteem.”
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu): Last summer I devoured Season 1 of this clever and funny whodunit with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selina Gomez. I am a few episodes into Season 2 and it’s just as crafty as anticipated. Plus the addition of Shirley MacLaine and Amy Schumer (playing herself) create just the right amount of comedic star power.
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Amazon Prime Video): I do love a good coming-of-age love story- and this one fits the bill. Based on the young adult book trilogy by Jenny Han, the series is based on a “love triangle between one girl and two brothers. [It’s] a story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer.” Yes, please!
The Bear (Hulu): “Move over Kitchen Nightmares, there’s a new series in town unpacking the tumultuous day-to-day happenings of restaurant life. The Bear is here to unpack the chaotic, addictive world of the kitchen, while also looking at the relationships that inform who we are as people.” So good, and each episode is only 22 minutes long.
The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix): “Mickey Haller, an iconoclastic idealist, runs his law practice out of the back seat of his Lincoln, as he takes on cases big and small across the expansive city of Los Angeles. When Hollywood lawyer Jerry Vincent is murdered, Haller inherits his practice, including the defense of Trevor Elliott, a tech billionaire accused of murdering his wife and her lover. But as Haller prepares for the case that could launch him into the big time, he learns that Vincent’s killer may be coming for him next.”
Inventing Anna (Netflix): If you haven’t already watched this Shonda Rhimes drama based on “the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene – and stole their money as well,” then grab your remote and buckle up.
Bling Empire (Netflix): “Crazy Rich Asians in real life. That’s probably the best description of the reality series Bling Empire. This Netflix show is an instant hit, praised for its representation and “cultural celebration” of Asian Americans. This show follows the lives of East Asian socialites in Los Angeles, California as they enjoy their materialistic and sometimes drama-filled days.” Bling is an understatement. It is over-the-top and sometimes laugh-out-loud hilarious.
The Movies that Made Us (Netflix): This American documentary streaming television series is dedicated to popular movies from the 1980s and 1990s, and tells the stories behind them (kind of like “Behind the Music”, but for movies). Each of the three seasons features 4 movies that include Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, Pretty Woman and Elf. It’s so good I binged all 3 seasons.
On my list of shows to try:
Candy
Bad Vegan
Senior Year
Maggie
Behind Her Eyes
