Now that summer is here I am grateful for the warm weather and sunshine. However, with all of the kids’ non-stop summer activities and weekend getaways, I find myself trapped in my car a lot. By now, you know I am an avid podcast listener and audiobook lover. So, I am constantly saving new goodies to my online libraries. Will you be traveling this summer? Take a look at this list of binge-worthy listens and load up for a summer on the road. I also added some of the tv shows that are worth a watch if you finally get time to unwind on the couch this summer.
Podcasts:
The Case: “In November of 1989, 16-year-old Jennifer Fay left home for a party in Brockton, Massachusetts. She was never seen again. Three decades later, Kirk Minihane began investigating Jennifer’s disappearance as part of Barstool Sports’ first-ever true-crime podcast.”
Exit Scam: “In 2018, Gerald Cotten, the founder of Canada’s biggest Bitcoin exchange, died under mysterious circumstances during a honeymoon trip to India. His customers were told that the $215 million they’d deposited on the exchange was lost forever- because Gerry had forgotten to leave behind his passwords. But here’s the thing: not everyone believes he’s dead.”
To Live and Die in LA, season 2: “On January 27, 2017, a 20-year-old college student named Elaine Park left her ex-boyfriend’s home in Calabasas. Five days later, her Honda Civic was found abandoned on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, not far from the home of Rolling Stone contributing editor Neil Strauss and his wife Ingrid. The two of them, along with their neighbors, Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and concert violinist Ann Marie Simpson, formed an unlikely investigative team determined to find out: What happened to Elaine Park?”
The Piketon Massacre: “The most notorious mass murder in Ohio’s history happened on the night of April 21, 2016, in rural Pike County. Four crime scenes, thirty-two gunshot wounds, eight members of the Rhoden family left dead in their homes. Two years later a local family of four, the Wagners, are arrested and charged with the crimes.”
Final Days on Earth: “Dammion Heard is a 20-year-old college freshman on a wrestling scholarship at Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. After a party at a friend’s house on Saturday, March 29, 2014, Dammion goes missing. Who is Dammion Heard and what was he doing in the final days of his life?”
CounterClock, Season 3: “Investigative journalist Delia D’Ambra is launching the third installment of audiochuck’s popular podcast CounterClock. Season 3 is the biggest investigation yet sending Delia hunting for answers across five decades. This 20-episode series will release in its entirety on April 29th, 2021 the 32-year anniversary of the Pelley family massacre in Lakeville, Indiana. Delia’s year-long investigation into the infamous family murders includes never-before-heard interviews from people closest to the victims and the initial police investigation. After reviewing more than 6,000 court documents, depositions, transcripts, and photographs, Delia has traveled from Northern Indiana to South Florida following leads that connect unsolved crimes in the Sunshine State to the Pelley family.”
TV Shows:
Hacks, HBO Max: “Hacks explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old.” This is funny, smart, and addicting!
Manifest, Netflix: “Montego Air Flight 828 from Jamaica to New York City experiences a brief period of severe turbulence. When they land the 191 passengers and crew learn that over five and a half years have passed while they were in the air, during which time they were presumed dead. As they rejoin society, the passengers begin to face the fact that their lives—and loved ones—are not the same as they were.”
Cruel Summer, Prime Video: “A small Texas town when a beautiful popular teen, Kate, is abducted and, seemingly unrelated, a girl, Jeanette, goes from being a sweet, awkward outlier to the most popular girl in town and, by ’95, the most despised person in America.” This was SOOOO good.
Girls 5 Eva, Peacock: From Tina Fey comes this purely fun show, “When a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 1990s gets sampled by a young rapper, its members reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot – this time while balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents and shoulder pain.”
Mare of Easttown, HBO Max: If you haven’t seen it yet, just start NOW. Kate Winslet is amazing.
Sherlock, Amazon: “In this modernized version of the Conan Doyle characters, using his detective plots, Sherlock Holmes lives in early 21st century London and acts cockier towards Scotland Yard’s detective inspector Lestrade because he’s actually less confident. Doctor Watson is now a fairly young veteran of the Afghan war, less adoring and more active.” This show ran from 2010-2017 with 4 seasons starring Benedict Cumberbatch. I was hooked from the first episode and was so bummed when it was all over. Each episode is roughly 90 minutes, so they feel like mini-movies. Perfect for a rainy afternoon binge session!
