Seasonal Sip: Buena Vista Irish Coffee

My husband and I recently visited some friends in the San Francisco area and spent some time wandering the city. We landed at the Buena Vista Cafe for brunch, a place my husband remembered fondly from his business school days in the area. This landmark spot is known for its hearty fare, Golden Gate views, and its killer Irish Coffee (they go through 100 bottles of Irish whiskey and pour over 2000 Irish coffees a day). Needless to say, neither the Eggs Benedict nor warm coffee cocktails disappointed. We ate at the counter and watched the bartenders whip up the specialty drinks all morning. With the temps dropping, it’s the perfect excuse to try this at home —brunch has never tasted so good. The ingredients are simple, and the results are delicious.

2 sugar cubes
4-6 ounces of brewed coffee
1 1/3 ounces Irish whiskey
Heavy cream, lightly whipped

1. Preheat a 6-ounce heatproof glass by filling it with hot water. Once warm, discard the water.
2. Add 2 sugar cubes to the glass, then add coffee until the glass is 3/4 full. Stir and dissolve sugar.
3. Add whiskey to the coffee and stir gently and briefly to combine.
4. Float a layer of whipped cream over the top of the coffee by pouring it gently over a spoon.
