I first heard of Johann Hari a few years ago when he was a guest on Kelly Corrigan’s podcast as the author of one of her favorite books, Lost Connections. This introduction to Johann spurred a Google search and a deeper dive into the man with the wise words on humanity. His book, Stolen Focus, seemed the most relevant to me at the time, as it addressed attention span issues and addictions to technology —two things our teenagers were struggling with. When my husband Chris told me that he was coming to speak in Darien at a lunch sponsored by Liberation Programs (he is the CFO), I knew I would be attending (and bringing along a handful of friends). Known primarily for the treatment and prevention of substance use and mental health issues, Liberation Programs also works closely with local communities, forging connections that ultimately save lives, and Johann seems like a perfect fit for a guest speaker. Whether he is discussing addiction to our smartphones, the causes of anxiety, or the surprising benefits of Ozempic, he is inspirational to listen to (and his accent doesn’t hurt either). If you would like to learn more about Johann, please check out some of the books and links below. And please join me at the Liberation Programs’ Lunch on November 5th to hear him speak. We can all benefit from a bit of inspiration these days.
